Swiftboating Obama: a big deal or a big yawn?

I’ve been waiting for this shoe to drop. Far-right writer Jerome Corsi was the co-author of Unfit for Command: Swiftboat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry, a controversial book that rose to be a NY Times bestseller and helped launch the controversy about Kerry’s military record, and helped torpedo Kerry’s presidential bid.

In the interim, Corsi has since been busy asserting a fanciful plot for the union of North America. I ran into him at the New Orleans summit between Bush-Harper-Calderon and he told me that he was working on a book on Obama. So I’ve been waiting and wondering what Corsi could come up with that would rival his anti-Kerry effort and whether he would spring something unexpected on the campaign that could change the landscape.

Today his press release landed in my inbox and from what I can tell the Obama-attack doesn’t hold anything we haven’t heard already: he’s a leftist, his step-father was a Muslim, his father was born a Muslim, (for the details on Obama’s faith, see my story here) he had associations with former radical professors, with Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Tony Rezko… So far, Obama has withstood these issues. The political stuff about Kenya, we haven’t heard much about… We’ll soon see whether the book raises them into a new controversy. Corsi has already been interviewed on Fox News.  Debunkers on the left are sharpening their knives.

From the press release:

“In this thoroughly researched and documented book, THE OBAMA NATION: LEFTIST POLITICS AND THE CULT OF PERSONALITY (Threshold Editions; August 1st, 2008; $28.00), the #1 New York Times bestselling coauthor of Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry, Jerome R. Corsi, Ph.D., explains why the extreme leftism of an Obama presidency would leave the United States weakened, diminished, and divided, and why Obama must be defeated—and how he can be…

Obama’s extensive connections with Islam and radical politics, from his father’s and stepfather’s Islamic backgrounds, to his Communist and socialist mentors in Hawaii and Chicago, to his long-term and close associations with former Weather Underground heroes William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn—associations much closer than heretofore revealed by the press Barack and wife Michelle’s twenty-year-long religious affiliation with the black-liberation theology of former Trinity United Church of Christ Reverend Jeremiah Wright, whose sermons have always been steeped in a rage first expressed by Frantz Fanon, Stokely Carmichael, and Malcolm X, a rage that Corsi shows has deep meaning for Obama

Obama’s continuing connections with Kenya, the homeland of his father, through his support for the candidacy of Raila Odinga, the radical socialist presidential contender who came to power amid Islamist violence and church burnings

Obama’s involvement in the slum-landlord empire of the Chicago political fixer Tony Rezko, who helped to bankroll Obama’s initial campaigns and to purchase Barack and Michelle’s dream-home property

The background and techniques of the Obama campaign’s cult of personality, including the derivation of the words “hope” and “change”..”

Swiftboating Obama: a big deal or a big yawn?

  1. Luiza I don’t know how press releases work exactly. Would they leave out the juiciest stories in the release, in order for you to buy the book, or would the most controversial stuff be mentioned?

If that’s all he’s got, Obama will be fine. He’s already survived the controversies, as you write, and there’s nothing new.

I think Kerry being ‘swiftboated’ was a unique case. Kerry’s wartime colleagues questioned his valour, and conduct after the war, and they were not shy about presenting their arguments.

  2. jwl, McCain was ‘swiftboated’ by Bush’s campaign in the 2000 South Carolina primary. Kerry wasn’t a unique case. Not saying that the Democrats are angels but… those Repulicans know some nasy tricks.

  3. Blues Clair There’s no question that people, on both sides, launch scurrilous attacks against their opponents.

I think Kerry case was unique because the guys making the accusations were not doing it anonymously. They held press conferences, wrote a book and did interviews using their real names/faces and challenged Kerry to refute their accusations.

  4. Oh great, Jerome Corsi’s at it again, slandering up the only hope our country’s got. But, if you’re looking for a book of filthy lies and trying to figure out if Corsi’s is for you, check out the table of contents. How about Chapter 2: “If only I could smoke my own radiance.”

  5. The ignorance of Americans is astounding. Most do not read newspapers or intelligently analyze news and separate facts from fiction. Yet we have a sad situation where these ignoramus will elect a president with so much power and influence over the world. Last time they elected an Idiot and what happened. Never mind they went on to destroy a country named Iraq that had nothing to do with 9/11, they spent billions of dollars they did not have, financed by foreign governments, and now are in big debt. Lost over 4,000 lives and many times more injured. Now they are arguing about whether Obama is black enough, or too black, is he Christian enough or too Christian. McCain’s campaign is managed by those who got Bush elected and are conducted a disreputable smear campaign. McCain, like Hillary Clinton, before him is simply a stooge in the hands of his campaign, changing his position in direction of wind by the minute. He is morally and ethically bankrupt.

  6. …so…how are we doing with the “ethnic cleansing thing” guys?….Darfur, etc….sigh

    ….anyone, anyone?…..

  7. I would agree with the person above who aaid, “The ignorance of Americans is astounding. Most do not read newspapers or intelligently analyze news and separate facts from fiction. Yet we have a sad situation where these ignoramus will elect a president with so much power and influence over the world.”. That is why (if he believes they elected an idiot last time) they are trying to go beyond that level of idiocy and top it by electing a hundredfold worse idiot in Obama.
I would like to see what all of your responses will be, not to Corsi, but to David Freddoso for writing “The Case Against Barack Obama: The Unlikely Rise and Unexamined Agenda of the Media’s Favorite Candidate.”. Apparently it is just hot off the presses and hasn’t mobilized a move like the Swift Boat one YET.

  8. “The ignorance of Americans is astounding…”

cut the average folk some slack. if we as Canadians were blanketed as thoroughly as them we’d be just as prone. our saving grace is that we’re small potatoes.
