The easily impressed vote

According to a Canadian Press poll, 13 percent of “NDP-inclined” voters will be more likely to vote for the party if it drops “new” from its name.

The easily impressed vote

  1. So the people who vote NDP anyways will vote extra hard if it was just the DP.

    • It must make Layton feel good to know he's attracting such engaged and thoughtful voters.

  2. I've always thought they should go the other way, and rebrand as the New NDP, or Canada's New NDP. The New New Democratic party. Because we must move forward, not backward, upward, not forward, and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom

    • The NNDP – The Democratic choice of a New New generation.

  3. I can only hope all the pundits that were so amused by the vaguely scatological connotations of CCRAP or giggled about "teabagger" protests would likewise get worked up about any coincidental similarity of "Democratic Party" to other such unrelated concepts with (NSFW) identical acronyms.

  4. I can only hope all the pundits that were so amused by the vaguely scatological connotations of CCRAP or giggled about "teabagger" protests would likewise get worked up about any coincidental similarity of "Democratic Party" to other such unrelated concepts with (decidedly family-unfriendly) identical acronyms.

  5. LOL!

    What can say? I'm married.

  6. I can only hope all the pundits that were so amused by the vaguely scatological connotations of CCRAP or giggled about "teabagger" protests would likewise get worked up about any coincidental similarity of "Democratic Party" to other such (decidedly family-unfriendly) unrelated concepts with identical acronyms.

(At least, to the extent that 40 years of "NDP" would likely lead to popular adoption of "DP," and not "the Democratic Party" or "Democrats," contra the American scenario.)

    • C'mon – I just had to go look up DP to see what you meant, and I'm hardly sheltered. (Teabagger too, when that came up, so maybe I *am* a bit naive!) CRAP, on the other hand…

(But now that you mention it, I'm not a fan of DP as it was an ethnic slur in the 1960s or thereabouts, used to smear new immigrants as Displaced Persons.)

      • Yeah, Democratic Party alone has too many other connotations and DP isn't a good acronym. Maybe the Canadian Democratic Party (CDP). Though those initials make me think of the Christian Democrats in Germany…

        • Which brings us back to my most excellent, yet humbly offered suggestion: Cooperative Commonwealth Revival (CCR).

I keep hoping it will take the convention by storm.

Alternatively, they could go with A Coalitionwork Orange (ACO).

But for all I know, those could be acronyms for two of the most depraved sex acts known to humans.

          • Dude! You've never had an ACO?

          • They could use "Bad Moon Rising" as the party theme song.

  7. Aaron, Aaron, Aaron. An NDP-inclined voter is ALREADY easily impressed.

    Sorry. Couldn't help it.
