The question of 2011 (II)

Canadian Press reviews the tea leaves and suggests a Parliamentary debate is in the offing.

Defence Minister Peter MacKay told the House of Commons defence committee today Canada will not be leaving Afghanistan even after the combat mission expires in 2011…

His remarks echo Conservative MP Deepak Obhrai, the parliamentary secretary to the foreign affairs minister, who told the Commons in an impromptu debate on Afghanistan earlier in the week that the future mission will be brought before MPs. “I can tell the honourable member that when the mission is debated after 2011 by Parliament, he, as the Liberal foreign affairs critic, will have an opportunity to full participate in that debate,” Mr. Obhrai said in response to a question from Liberal MP Bob Rae.

The question of 2011 (II)

  1. Is anyone here surprised?

  2. Nobody said we would be LEAVING AFGHANISTAN. NOBODY.

It has always been from the get go that the COMBAT MISSION WOULD END and we would transition towards reconstruction and humanitarian development.

My god, the extremes to which the media and lefties are going to try to make this seem like a flip flop is mind boggling.

    • Nobody but Harper…two weeks ago.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Canada is firm in its commitment to withdraw from Afghanistan in 2011, even as a report from the mission's NATO commander says more resources are needed in the war-torn country.

      • Oh c'mon Robert.. you can't hold Harper to what he said! Why, if conservative supporters started doing that they'd actually have to pay attention.

      • Oh c'mon Robert.. you can't hold Harper to what he said! Why, if conservative supporters started doing that they'd actually have to pay attention to here and now and might lose track of what Pierre Trudeau did!

      • No direct quote, just media characterization.

Its been said again and again. In 2011 Canada will withdraw from our COMBAT MISSION in Afghanistan.

"Canada is not leaving Afghanistan," Harper said flatly. Instead the mission will move from a predominantly military one to "a civilian humanitarian development mission," he said.

  3. I was under the impression that we're ending our military involvement in 2011, but will continue providing humanitarian and development assistance. What the Conservatives are saying doesn't seem to contradict that.
