‘The stubby bottle of Canadian politics’

Stephen Marche has three not entirely unreasonable proposals for the new NDP.

The Beaver Party The vagueness of the name is its greatest advantage. It sounds nationalistic, environmental and efficient, but doesn’t force the party into any specifics. As we saw during the campaign of Barack Obama, the only way for the left to win is to avoid talking about what they believe as much as possible. Instead of directly answering difficult questions about domestic or foreign policy, members of the party could just blather endlessly about the beaver and all the lessons it has to teach us as Canadians: its independence, its beauty, its community spirit, its capacity for endurance during tough times. Another positive: a wide array of possible joke T-shirts.
