BERLIN – Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn says he is stepping down in the interests of the company as it grapples with the emissions scandal.
Winterkorn said in a statement that Volkswagen needs a fresh start, including in terms of personnel.
He said he was clearing the way for the fresh start.
He said he was acting in the interests of the company, although he said he is not aware of any wrongdoing on his part.
A successor was not immediately announced.
