Haskayne School of Business EMBA

University of Calgary, Calgary

The Haskayne executive MBA program is structured to help students both maintain and improve their existing careers while still enrolled in the program. Over 23 months, those studying will be able to immediately bring principles learned in the classroom to their own companies. Classes alternate between Friday and Saturday sessions, allowing an easier balance between work and school responsibilities.

The program ends with an opportunity to apply newly gained theoretical knowledge during an international study tour, where students travel to learn from—and network with—professionals from other cultures. Destinations are set at the beginning of each academic year—previous classes have visited Japan, Argentina and Chile.

The first year focuses on improving students’ management, finance, marketing, economic and decision-making skills. Mandatory courses spread over two semesters help participants think critically about business issues from their own careers. Students choose electives in the program’s second year. This ability to customize the program is a response to feedback from past classes. Through electives, students can pursue a finance specialization.

Students in the finance stream study topics like mergers and acquisitions, and derivatives and financial risk management. Other specialized electives cover business law and ethics.

In addition to the required programs, students can participate in a number of experiential learning opportunities. The school hosts an executive speaker series, with previous guests including WestJet’s Clive Beddoe, Jennifer McNeill of Cipher Systems and Michael Tims from Peters & Co. The school also offers leadership development workshops on topics including building high-performance teams and cultivating political savvy.

Notable alumni include Chandra Crawford, three-time cross-country ski racing Olympian; Patrick Lor, co-founder of iStock; and Gary Kovacs, former chief executive officer of Mozilla Corporation.
