The Odette School of Business recently graduated its first class in the professional accounting stream of its MBA. Accredited by the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario, the program prepares students to write the professional body’s common final exam. While the program is currently completed in 12 months, Odette is developing a two-year option that would allow for increased flexibility and provide time for participants to complete the practical experience requirements for their CPA designation.

The school offers a unique variation on a co-op placement called the Advanced Program for Experiential Consulting (APEX). During orientation week, students are placed in teams of five or six individuals, who are then paired with a corporate partner such as Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, Crayola Canada or Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Over the course of their studies, the teams complete two projects at their company, spending 500 hours on each one. Each effort concludes with a presentation to the company’s executive management team.

Students can spend the final semester of their program at another university in Ontario or at international destinations such as Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Karlstad University in Sweden or the United Kingdom’s Coventry University.

Odette recently renovated its corporate study area, where students are able to work in a professional setting. Each APEX team has a designated meeting room in the facility, where they can meet with their corporate partners. There is also a kitchenette, lounge area and satellite television.

Each year, the MBA society organizes Enroute, a networking event in Toronto that the entire class attends to meet alumni and potential employers. The school also hosts the Georgie-Odette Leadership Symposium, an annual event focused on successful leadership techniques. Notable past speakers include Michael Rossi, president of Adidas Canada, and Maureen Jensen, chair of the Ontario Securities Commission.
