Sobey offers arguably the most comprehensive venture capital education in Canada.

At its heart is the new Venture Grade student investment fund, a student-run operation that invests in privately held equity under the guidance of faculty and business advisers—the first program of its kind in Canada. Having raised $200,000 from donors, the fund recently made its first investment. Students put $15,000 into Trip Ninja, a travel planning start-up.

In addition to Venture Grade, the school also offers a sustainable-investment venture fund elective course and hosts the Canadian finals of the Venture Capital Investment Competition.

Students can take the MBA program on a full-time or part-time basis. The full-time program is completed over a period of 16 months, while the part-time program is completed over a period of 36 months. Both programs require applicants to have two years of work experience upon applying, and both begin in September.

The program offers students the opportunity to specialize in a variety of fields including finance, marketing and sustainable entrepreneurship.

The new marketing specialization offers students the chance to work with major regional retailers to enhance customer experience and participate in Shopify’s online retail challenge and an IBM hackathon.

All students have the opportunity to travel. This year, participants went to Hungary, where they toured businesses and culturally significant locations.

The Sobey School founded Atlantic Canada’s only chapter of Net Impact, a non-profit dedicated to using business skills in support of social and environmental causes.
