Gunman opens fire at Illinois campus

At least 15 people injured, gunman killed in rampage

At least 15 people were injured when a gunman opened fire at Northern Illinois University this afternoon. The suspect shot several people in a science lecture shortly after 3pm. The gunman was killed during the rampage.

CNN reported that 18 people were shot. The Kishwaukee Community Hospital posted on its website that 13 patients had arrived at the hospital. At least three victims have head injuries. Some news reports say that two people were killed.

Police told the student paper The Northern Star that the gunman is dead, although it is not clear whether he was shot by police or turned the gun on himself.

There was as many as 140 students in the lecture theatre where the shooting occurred. Witnesses have said that the suspect was a white male, wearing all black, and used a shotgun.

Northern Illinois University is near Chicago and has 25,000 students. Classes are cancelled Friday.
