Green community proposed for UAlberta South Campus

Urban planning panel recommends high density neighbourhood next to transit station

The University of Alberta’s South Campus should be developed as a high density carbon neutral neighborhood, according to an urban planning panel commissioned by the province. Among the recommendations are for student housing to be built atop of a sports and recreation complex, currently under construction, known as the Go Centre. The Urban Land Institute called for “five minute living” with daycare, entertainment and shops all clustered together, near the South Campus light rail transit station. The proposals could clash with the university’s own plans, which include building a triple arena complex adjacent to the Go Centre.
