Students smoke bomb Quebecor building

Tuition protest takes aim at ‘libertarian’ media

Montreal students protesting possible tuition hikes directed their anger towards media company Quebecor Inc. by smoke bombing the the company’s head office. Hundreds of journalists and other staff had to be evacuated, but no one was injured. Police and fire department arrived at 2:30pm, and within the hour the building was deemed safe for re-entry. A media release from the student protesters taking credit for the incident, stated: “It’s the libertarian ideology promoted in the various media properties of the company and their anti-union attitude that pushed protesters to target this company.” The statement also identified the fact that the province is preparing to raise tuition as the motivation behind the attack. Quebecor owns the Journal de Montreal as well as the Sun newspaper chain.
