Americans go on the offensive in Afghanistan

4,000 marines are involved

American marines and Afghan soldiers today launched a major combat operation in the Helmand region of Afghanistan – the first large offensive since U.S. President Barack Obama authorized the deployment of an additional 17,000 troops to the region. Some 4,000 marines are involved, along with 650 Afghan soldiers. No casualties have yet been reported.
