EDMONTON – Albertans will get a better snapshot today of the province’s books when Finance Minister Doug Horner releases the second-quarter budget update.
So far, the news has been bad.
Premier Alison Redford’s government expected to run an $886 million deficit this year, but that has already ballooned to $3 billion.
Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith says compounding the problem is that oil and gas numbers are still running well below government predictions.
Horner has also been under fire for announcing he and Redford are abandoning their earlier pledge to balance the budget by 2013-14.
Horner says they will still balance the day-to-day spending, but will take on debt to pay for roads, schools, and hospitals that he says can’t wait.
