CALGARY – Former Progressive Conservative MP Harvie Andre has died.

His family says he died Sunday of cancer.

Andre, who was 72, represented the Calgary Centre riding for more than 20 years.

He was first elected in 1972 and was a key supporter of Joe Clark’s successful bid for the Tory leadership in 1976.

Andre had several cabinet roles in Brian Mulroney’s government in the 1980s — including minister responsible for Canada Post — and at one point served as government House leader.

In 1993, Andre returned to private life where he worked in the oil sector and served on numerous corporate boards.
