Britain says its continued support in Afghanistan depends on Karzai cleaning up his act

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has warned Afghan President Hamid Karzai that he will not put British troops “in harm’s way for a government that does not stand up against corruption.” A second round of Afghan’s fraud-ridden presidential election was cancelled this week after Karzai’s main challenger, Abdullah Abdullah, withdrew over concerns that insufficient steps had been taken to ensure it would be free and fair—handing an uncontested victory to Karzai. Brown said that Britain would not abandon Afghanistan but warned that its continued support depended on Karzai cleaning up his government.
