Listeria scare returns

26,000 wieners pulled from shelves

Maple Leaf is voluntarily recalling nine meat products that have been distributed nationally over fears they may be contaminated with listeria bacterium. The meats are all labelled with the Shopsy’s, Maple Leaf or Hygrade brands and have the identification numbers EST. 611 and L1 stamped on the edge of their packaging. The company says it found the possible contamination thanks to stringent regulations it put in place after one of its plants was involved in a listeriosis outbreak that killed at least 20 people last year. There have been no reports of illness connected with the meats.
