Man, 86, survives five days lost in Manitoba bush

Officer finds man after ATV gets stuck in mud

Joseph Kuz, an 86-year-old Winnipeg man, was found alive and in relatively good health after five days lost in the bush near Hadashville, Man. RCMP Staff Sgt. Mike Hengen says he’s thankful that his ATV got stuck in the mud just metres from where Kuz was resting. Hengen, an RCMP officer and member of the 40-person search team, only heard Kuz’s moaning after he shut off his noisy engine in order to try and dislodge the wheels. Kuz said he was so exhausted, hungry and dehydrated that he was unable to yell loud enough for searchers to hear him. Kuz had set out to hike to a remote cabin on Thursday. When his family didn’t hear from him by Friday, they called the RCMP. Kuz thanked Hengen and told him, “I don’t know if I could’ve made it any longer.”
