By Wednesday of last week, he had already responded to opposition questions on 419 occasions, compared to 254 responses from Mr. Harper and 124 from Transport Minister and Quebec lieutenant Lawrence Cannon, House records show.

And were it not for the controversy over incentives allegedly offered dying MP Chuck Cadman in 2005, Mr. Van Loan would have racked up even more at-bats. The government assigned affable B.C. MP James Moore to field questions on the Cadman affair and he tallied more than 215 responses in question period this year, which put him third on the Conservative leader board, just behind the prime minister. Ottawa-area MP and parliamentary secretary Pierre Poilievre squeaked into the Top 10 with 66 responses, most on the “in-and-out” election financing controversy.

On just about every other issue — from the Brian Mulroney-Karlheinz Schreiber inquiry, the NAFTA-gate leaks about discussions with the Barack Obama campaign, and Maxime Bernier’s embarrassing meltdown over his former paramour — Mr. Van Loan has fronted the government response day after day.

Mr. Van Loan’s office declined to comment. The only question he doesn’t want to answer, it seems, is why he answers so many questions. […]
