Union taking government to court

Public Service Alliance says students, casual workers should be allowed to join union

Union membership—and rights—should be extended to the federal government’s summer student and casual employees, says The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC). PSAC, Canada’s largest federal union, is taking the government to Ontario Superior Court of Justice to challenge a federal law that makes it illegal for these workers to join unions. According to PSAC, this provision of the Public Service Labour Relations Act contravenes the constitutional right to “freedom of association” and collective bargaining.
