MONTREAL – The Canadian Auto Workers union says it has reached a tentative deal with Via Rail.
It followed days of tense, round-the-clock negotiations in Montreal and averted a strike that was set to begin just after midnight.
The union had sounded pessimistic on Thursday evening, saying the two sides were far apart.
No details of the tentative settlement were released.
Ratification votes are being scheduled.
The CAW represents about 2,000 customer service, on-board service and maintenance workers at Via Rail.
