They said it was going to be an embarrassment. Ticket sales, they said, would be pitiful. And yet, if you visited any of the Pan Am Games’ venues in the last few weeks, you would have found an admiring buzz for a Games that dared to know exactly what it was. It heralded a new rising generation of stars that marks a bright future for athletics in Canada, introducing the hometown fans to sprinting prodigy Andre De Grasse and the charming FAB IV of Canadian diving. And thanks to the intimate nature of the competition, fans were right there with the athletes, sharing in the ecstasy of Canada’s 217 medals, the best Pan Am performance in our country’s history.
