Lawrence Hill, the award-winning author of The Book of Negroes, has written his fourth novel eight years after that seminal read. The Illegal, in stores now, is very much a book for our times, with its marathon-running protagonist who has fled violence in his homeland and gone into hiding as an undocumented refugee in a rich nation where he is not wanted. Donna Bailey Nurse interviewed Hill about The Illegal here.

On Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 7 pm ET, Hill will deliver a lecture at the Centre for International Governance Innovation, and Maclean’s will be streaming his conversation about his writing process, his inspirations, and his work.
