With his Anthropocene Project on display at two major Canadian galleries, Edward Burtynsky sat down for a live interview with Maclean’s senior writer Paul Wells at the recently renovated National Arts Centre in Ottawa on Oct. 24—the seventh of a monthly series of conversations presented by the Canadian Bankers Association in partnership with the NAC and CPAC. Why are we doing this, anyway?
It’s no small feat for an artist to be featured at either the National Gallery of Canada or the Art Gallery of Ontario. Edward Burtynsky, along with collaborators Nicholas de Pencier and Jennifer Baichwal, has managed simultaneous exhibitions in both spaces for their multidisciplinary take on an era in which permanent human impact on the planet outweighs any other cause. The world-renowned trio deploy “art, film, virtual reality, augmented reality, and scientific research” in service to a project that “investigates human influence on the state, dynamic and future of the Earth.”
Burtynsky’s conversation with Wells, one of the country’s best-known political analysts and reporters, and the host of the Maclean’s National Leader’s Debate during the 2015 federal election, will cover a variety of topics and include audience questions.
This is the seventh of a monthly series of conversations Wells is conducting with leading Canadian political figures. Last month, he sat down with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. In June, he sat down with Jane Philpott, minister of Indigenous services. In May, he sat down with Jason Kenney, leader of Alberta’s United Conservative Party. In April, he sat down with Katie Telford, chief of staff to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. In March, he sat down with Conservative leader Andrew Scheer. In February, he sat down with NDP leader Jagmeet Singh. Watch those conversations below.
