Nunavut legislature member missing on snowmobile trip

Nunavut MLA Pauloosie Keeyootak was supposed to have arrived at his destination March 23

The search is ramping up for a Nunavut politician and his snowmobiling companions missing for days on the tundra of Baffin Island.

Nunavut MLA Pauloosie Keeyootak left Iqaluit a week ago and was supposed to have arrived at his destination on March 23.

He and his two travelling companions never arrived in Pangnirtung, about 300 kilometres away.

Now, search parties from both communities are combing the well-travelled route.

Aircraft including a Twin Otter, a Hercules and a Cormorant helicopter are in the skies.

The weather in the area has been cold but clear and searchers have good visibility.

Keeyootak represents a riding on the east coast of Baffin Island.
