Police investigate early-morning robbery in downtown Toronto

TORONTO — An armoured car guard is in critical condition after being shot several times during an attempted robbery early Thursday in Toronto.

Police were called after shots were heard just after 1 a.m. north of the downtown core (in the Avenue Road and Lawrence Avenue area).

Staff Insp. Mike Earl told CP24 that a guard was shot as G4S security company truck pulled up to service a TD Bank branch.

“Immediately upon his exiting the truck and approaching the back doors, he was ambushed by anywhere from three to four individuals.”

Earl says a gun battle followed between the guard and the suspects.

“There were several shots fired from the suspects and the guard protecting his own life and the guard was subsequently shot several times.”

Earl said the suspects fled the scene on foot.

Some arrests have been made but Earl said it was not yet clear if they were involved in the attempted robbery.

“There have been some indicuduals arrested in the area … we’re investigating to see if they are actually involved in this incident or not.”

Earl said residents in the area are being asked to check their property and call police if they see any weapons or discarded clothing.
