Jim Prentice pitching Wildrose-PC merger: Opposition leader

Alberta Wildrose leader Danielle Smith says it's not going to happen

EDMONTON – Alberta Wildrose leader Danielle Smith says Jim Prentice wants to eliminate her party as a threat before he even officially enters the race to become premier.

The Opposition leader says someone from Prentice’s inner circle has called one of her confidantes to pitch a merger between the Wildrose and the Progressive Conservatives should Prentice win the Tory leadership race.

Smith says her response was a categorical no.

She won’t say who called from the Prentice camp.

Smith says both parties may be right of centre, but Tory spending scandals and deficits don’t make them a good fit for the Wildrose.

A spokesperson for Prentice could not be immediately reached for comment.
