Nipissing University is located in North Bay, on a wooded escarpment overlooking the shores of Lake Nipissing. The university, rooted in a century-old teachers’ college, offers a welcoming atmosphere, a student-to-faculty ratio of 20 to 1, and a host of opportunities for experiential learning. Undergrads have the opportunity to participate in original research to discover their intellectual passions and find their “eureka” moments. “Nipissing students enjoy a supportive learning environment, a strong sense of community, quality interaction with professors, and access to some of the best student support services in Canada,” says interim president Cheryl Sutton.

Nipissing’s campus boasts hiking and snowshoeing trails, cross-country skiing—even a waterfall. The Harris Learning Library features spacious group-study rooms. The athletic facilities have basketball and volleyball courts, a fitness centre, and lab space for researchers in the physical health and education program. Residence rooms are all singles and have access to common areas for socializing. The new NUSU Student Centre is slated for completion this year and will provide students with space to study and socialize. The centre will also feature a restaurant and adjacent two-storey nightclub.

Standout Programs
• Nursing: Study the science behind nursing in student-centred classes and develop key skills in health-care delivery through hands-on learning and clinical experience at the nearby North Bay Regional Health Centre and agencies throughout the region.
• Criminal Justice: Students gain a well-rounded understanding of Canada’s criminal justice system through courses in psychology, sociology, law and forensic science. The program offers experiential learning opportunities and features four streams: criminal justice, criminology, policing and corrections.
Geography: Students learn to apply spatial data and the latest technology, including GIS and remote sensing, to develop solutions for environmental and social issues. Nipissing’s location by forests and lakes provides students with a natural and diverse outdoor lab.

Cool Courses
• Taking Criminological Theory to the Movies: Students examine how cinematic portrayals of crime affect our understanding of the justice system.
• Introduction to Interdisciplinary Analysis: A new theme, such as dreams, is presented each year; students then learn to use interdisciplinary analysis and collaborative thinking as tools to solve problems.
