Northern Lakes College (NLC) serves more than 50 communities throughout northern Alberta, and more than 50 per cent of NLC’s student population is Indigenous. NLC’s programs and services are available online through supported distance learning, and the college has flexible learning options for students who wish to obtain a diploma or certificate without moving away from home. Students can also get hands-on trade experience in their home communities at two mobile training labs. A dual credit program allows high school students to experience college programs while earning both high school and post-secondary credits.

NLC has student residences at the Grouard, Slave Lake and Wabasca campuses. Amenities at Slave Lake include a pool, gym, climbing wall and sports fields. At the Grouard and Slave Lake campuses, students can participate in outdoor activities such as kayaking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

NLC offers a range of certificate and diploma programs in business, health sciences, human services, technology, trades and academic upgrading. The college collaborates with university partners to provide degree-completion opportunities; diploma courses count toward a bachelor of education or social work. NLC also has a variety of professional accreditation and certificate programs in its continuing education and corporate training department.

Cool options

  • Business Administration: This program has a flexible schedule for working students and provides graduates with a broad range of business skills. Students can reinforce their degree with a human resources management diploma or a business diploma offered in partnership with Portage College.
  • Surveying Suite: The program begins with an introductory course. Students can then go on to complete a range of programs about survey theory and calculations.
  • Dual Credits: High school students earn both post-secondary and high school credits. Programs range from addiction counselling to power engineering.
