Yukon University

Founded 1983 | Whitehorse, YT

Yukon University’s mandate is “solving northern problems with northern expertise.” Located in Whitehorse, the school’s main Ayamdigut campus overlooks the river valley and mountains to the east. The college delivers more than 40 certificate, diploma and degree programs at 13 campuses across the territory.

In May of 2020, Yukon College officially became Yukon University—the first university in the Canadian territories. The university’s areas of focus include Indigenous self-determination and governance, climate change and sustainable resource development. The school’s offerings include the first made-in-the-Yukon degree, a bachelor of arts in Indigenous governance, developed in collaboration with 14 Yukon First Nations, a post-degree certificate in climate change policy, and a northernized bachelor of arts in business administration.

Applied research at the school focuses on climate change, cold-climate innovation, natural sciences, social science and technology innovation. Its Yukon Research Centre, equipped with a lab that features a growth chamber and an atomic absorption spectrometer, conducts research in mine reclamation, cold climate construction, climate change, community health and economic diversification.

The school’s Ayamdigut campus, which sits on a bluff overlooking the Yukon River valley, offers single and apartment-style residences.
