    .XXX website menu a snapshot of the sexual zeitgeist

    ICM release of ‘premium’ names is, well, revealing

    Attention aspiring pornographers: you can now own your very own “.XXX” website.

    Until recently, sales of URLs ending with the .XXX prefix were restricted to certain buyers.  If you were, say, the Walt Disney company, you could pay a fee to register Disney.XXX in order to prevent kids from stumbling across the wrong Bambi.  Or, if you were a member of the “adult Sponsored Community” (a.k.a. an established pornographer) you could bid on prime real estate like gay.XXX, which sold last year to the porn company Liberty Media Holdings for $500,000.

    The doors are now open to all. And today ICM registry, which runs .XXX, has released a menu of 1,000 “premium” URLs (Be warned: many of the names in this link are sexually explicit).

    The names were generated from data collected from over 8 million searches on Search.XXX, ICM’s porno search engine.  That means it’s an index of the most popular kinds of porn Internet users are after.  It’s a snapshot, if you will, of the sexual zeitgeist. Whether or not you want to break into the online pornography business, the list provides a fascinating document of what’s arousing the world.

    The #1 word porn-hunters searched for was “mature,” which will please both geriatrics and the site’s future owner, who may find it a relative bargain at $79,530. Compare that to “Girls.XXX” which is the most expensive URL at $220,000, but only #49 in popularity.

    “Blonde” (#9) does, alas, handily beat “brunette” (#98).  Romantics will be heartened to learn that many of those looking for porn are looking for “love,” which comes in at #101.

    The least popular .XXXs on offer?  Among them are “Marriage.XXX” “Tax.XXX” and “RealEstate.XXX” which would no doubt rank higher if the list were based purely on searches within Toronto.

    Again, these are not necessarily the cheapest .XXX sites on offer.  The prices are set by ICM, who deem “ddd.XXX” the cheapest at $333, followed closely by “giantess.XXX,” which has piqued my interest, and can be yours for $495.
