Contentions Made in 1980s Song Lyrics – True or False?

When two tribes go to war
A point is all that you can score.

– Two Tribes, Frankie Goes to Hollywood

FALSE. In addition to scoring a point, you can also kill people without going to jail. Plus, if the movies are to be believed, war is an ideal place to strike up relationships with a broad demographic of differing personalities, so long as you don’t mind watching them die off one by one, usually just after letting down their guard and making a startling emotional revelation the evening before the battle.

Might as well jump. Jump!
Go ahead, jump.
Might as well jump. Jump!
Go ahead, jump.
Might as well jump. Jump!
Go ahead, jump.
Get it and jump. Jump!
Go ahead, jump.

– Jump, Van Halen

TRUE. Hard to argue, really – they build a pretty convincing case.

The problem’s plain to see: too much technology
Machines to save our lives. Machines dehumanize.

– Mr. Roboto, Styx

TRUE and FALSE. Yes, machines dehumanize. But they also instantly turn pieces of whole fruit into delicious juice. So…

There’s nothin’ left to talk about
Unless it’s horizontally

– Physical, Olivia Newton-John

FALSE. Have you two discussed the situation in the Middle East or the magnetic properties of iron-based superconductors? I didn’t think so.

What you will and what you won’t
What you do and what you don’t
What you can and what you can’t
This is what you need to know.

– Da Da Da, Trio

FALSE. Or possibly TRUE. You’d have to be pretty high to know for sure.

There’s one thing, yes one thing
That turns gray sky to blue
That’s the look, that’s the look
The look of love.
– The Look of Love, ABC

FALSE. God and the weather can also do this. And possibly also that rain machine thingy from the Kate Bush video with Donald Sutherland, assuming it has a reverse button of some sort – which come to think of it, it probably doesn’t.

Believe it or not I’m walking on air
I never thought I could feel so free
Flying away on a wing and a prayer
Who could it be?
Believe it or not it’s just me.

— Greatest American Hero, Joey Scarbury

TRUE. That’s completely believable. What’s unbelievable is that such an awesome show was canceled after only three seasons and 44 episodes.

It’s like I told you
Only the lonely can play

– Only the Lonely, The Motels

TRUE. But only insofar as we’re talking about sudoku.

Doo doo doo
Doo doo doo
Doo doo doo
Doo doo doodoo
Doo doo

– Hungry Like the Wolf, Duran Duran

FALSE. As definitely proved years earlier by The Police, the factual answer is De Do Do Do De Da Da Da.
