Congratulations to Degrassi: the Next Generation, which was one of this year’s recipients of the Peabody award. The Peabodys are basically broadcasting awards that honour the ideal vision of radio and television, as media that can educate while entertaining; as such, they usually cite the educational or culturally-enlightening values of the shows they honour. For Degrassi, the award was for the two-part episode “My Body Is a Cage,” written by Michael Grassi, which dealt with transgender issues.
The citation says that the Degrassi episode does not “overdramatize its subject,” but the same can’t be said of the promos in the U.S. Here’s a Canadian promo for a batch of episodes that includes “My Body is a Cage”:
