The Backbench Top Ten

Our weekly, and wholly arbitrary, ranking of the ten most worthy, or at least entertaining, MPs, excluding the Prime Minister, cabinet members and party leaders. A celebration of all that is great and ridiculous about the House of Commons. Last week’s rankings appear in parentheses.

1. Jack Harris (1)
2. Maxime Bernier (2)
3. Michael Chong (3)
By perhaps year’s end, we could have a functioning all-party committee on Afghan detainee documents, full and open accounting of MP expenses and a reformed Question Period. Is it possible that our democracy is not quite as lamentable and broken as we like to think it is?
4. Michelle Simson (6)
Silly question. Where were all these MPs agitating for transparent public accounting, say, a month ago?
5. Pat Martin (5)
Mr. Martin on public outcry over MP expenses: “We’re getting the shit kicked out of us all across the country.” Is there a single topic Sir Dial-A-Quote wouldn’t happily comment on in some inflammatory fashion? Some enterprising Ottawa bureau should assign a different reporter to call Mr. Martin each day for the next two weeks with a new issue to see.
6. Francine Lalonde (5)
7. Helena Guergis (7)
8. Shelly Glover (8)
9. Daniel Paille (9)
10. Stephen Woodworth (-)
