The funny separatist

Whatever the merits of his political cause, Gilles Duceppe is foremost among current federal leaders in his ability to tell a joke.

At a poorly advertised and sparsely attended news conference in Toronto yesterday, Bloc Quebecois leader Gilles Duceppe was asked why he had not scheduled a meet-and-greet with “ordinary Ontarians” during a visit to Canada’s largest city in the midst of a tour of English Canada.

“I’m meeting with people who are organizing things, so I didn’t meet with the Association of Ordinary Ontarians,” he quipped, one of the few times he had to speak English.

The funny separatist

  1. Zing! That's a pretty good response to a pretty stupid question.

  2. The man can think on his feet, either to make a funny comment or to ask/answer a question sensibly. Too bad he's a separatist because other than that he's pretty astute (cheese hat notwithstanding).

    • Same with Bouchard, really. Although you have to wonder if federal politicians who only have to appeal to 7/30ths of the electorate and don't care about anyone else are able to get away with more, making them seem more forthright.

  3. I tried to join that association in high school and the rejection has made me eccentric for life.

  4. Because we all know separatists can take a joke. I crafted a joke the other day that apparently annoyed thousands and thousands of separatists. Franchement!

    • Ce n'est pas le même genre d'humour, s'est une culture totalement différente, haven't you heard.

      • Vive la différence.

    • I crafted a joke the other day that apparently annoyed thousands and thousands of separatists.

I didn't think they even noticed. It wasn't a very good joke. Une farce platte, en autres mots.

The fauxtrage the separatwits are expressing over that post is just what they do. Parizeau is revered by them for reasons that always eluded me, his skill at devastating his adversaries in both official languages notwithstanding. His true character was revealed just after the referendum and, that, at least for me, was that.

      • How would you know whether it was good or not? You can't even speak French, you fraud. ;-)
