This slow flirtation

One month ago—in a bizarrely under-discussed story—Canadian Press reported that “top Liberals” were sussing out Conservatives on the matter of Canada’s mission in Afghanistan after 2011, a “senior Liberal” disclosing that the opposition was “trying to make it clear to the government we’re open to discussions on training.”

Despite then the hysterical reactions of various professional observers, yesterday’s comments from Bob Rae in Kabul were not quite a revelation.

For his part, the Prime Minister apparently remains committed to a civilian mission—a mission he has stressed will involve no significant number of soldiers and does not require further debate in the House of Commons.
