Athabasca University created the world’s first interactive online MBA for executives in 1994. After 25 years, the program is one of the largest of its kind in Canada.

The program is entirely online, except for a one-week residency. Online coursework can be completed at any time of day and is divided into two phases. The first consists of six core courses and ends with a week-long comprehensive exam centred on case studies. Students who pass receive the post-baccalaureate diploma in management.

The second phase offers more customization. Participants must complete four mandatory courses but also take six elective courses, or three electives plus a five-month applied project.
At least one elective course must be taken in residence, in locations across Canada and abroad. Overseas courses are available in the U.K., Germany, Brazil, Singapore, Ireland, Greece and the United States (the U.S. course focuses on Silicon Valley). One international elective is offered each year, with students spending a week observing how top companies conduct business in each locale.

Athabasca University partners with several companies and organizations to create specialized concentrations. For example, a partnership with the Supply Chain Management Association allows students with the organization’s professional designation to complete the program up to six months faster. The university also partnered with the Business of Hockey Institute to create an elite MBA with courses specific to the business side of hockey. Graduates of this program earn their MBA and the certified hockey professional (CHP) designation. Another partnership allows students to earn both an MBA and the certified health executive (CHE) designation, the only professional credential for health care leaders in Canada. Meanwhile, the MBA for accountants offers students further training in financial management and corporate governance.
