This week’s magazine piece on Jack Layton and the NDP led to a chat with Brian Topp, the party strategist who ran the last campaign and will run the next. Talking generally about politics and public interest in such, he offered this—an observation that is probably not entirely original, but interesting nonetheless.
“The truth of the matter is that for more than two decades, the federal government has basically been going out of business in slow motion, withdrawing from the lives of most Canadians. The hard, cold truth is that often federal politics and what the federal government does has little impact on people’s lives, so they’re not following it all that closely.”
