“She’s My Girl…I Wish I Knew Her”

One celebrity death many of us might have missed is that of 91 year-old Lina Romay, the Mexican-American singer/actress who was the lead singer with Xavier Cugat’s band, got a few (mostly minor) movie and TV roles, and retired from performing in 1953. Not a particularly big career, yet she’ll always be remembered for one film: her appearance as herself in the Tex Avery MGM cartoon Señor Droopy, where she’s the dream girl of bullfighter Droopy and his nemesis, the Wolf. She had actually left MGM by the time the cartoon was made, but came back to do this one cameo, and I’m glad she did.
